With the capital campaigns ongoing, the American Heritage Railroad is hard at work laying down track on the museum grounds. During the 2006 Heritage Days, hundreds of visitors enjoyed the opportunity to ride our train.

The rest of the railroad will be completed in four phases:
Phase 1 calls for the installation of 3,500 feet of track with loops each end. This includes three main crossings, a storage container, and three temporary loading areas.

Phase 2 will include the installation of a maintenance shop, a gift shop, and a train station with another 600 to 1,000 feet of track near the maintenance area. A second track for loading at the main museum building will also be installed.

Phase 3 will install a loop on the south end of property with double switch track on the west side tressle. This will require about another 3,700 feet of track.

Phase 4 includes about another 500 feet of track and will set up an engine roundhouse and a turntable in the west loop.

Anyone is welcome to join our Railroad Division. The meetings for the group are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30p.m. at the Greenville Fire House on Harris Avenue.

The Railroad Division will have an Atlantic class Wagner Steam Engine, believed to be one of only 10 in existence. Additionally, the division operates a G-16 diesel outline train set that was built in 1956. Both will be 15-inch gauge.

Membership in the division is only $30 per year and you can be involved as much or as little as you would like. Lifetime memberships are also available for $1,250 for a single and $2,500 for a lifetime family membership.

We would love to have you as part of the division. Contact us at ( 618) 593-7742 or e-mail us at dktrainman@hotmail.com.
